This evening I had a very interesting conversation with Praneeth on a study done by Mckinsey. Thought I would put it up here. Even I can make sense and be intellectual too.
For starters, Mckinsey did a study on the business use of Web 2.0 technologies. The study reveals continuing investments in Web 2.0. Companies that are deriving business value from these tools are now shifting from using them experimentally to adopting them as part of a broader business practice. Companies report that they are using Web 2.0 both within and outside their walls—to forge tighter links with customers and suppliers and to engage employees more successfully.Mckinsey states after an initial period of promise and trial, companies are coming to understand the difficulty of realizing some of Web 2.0’s benefits. Only 21 percent of the respondents say they are satisfied overall with Web 2.0 tools, while 22 percent voice clear dissatisfaction. Further, some disappointed companies have stopped using certain technologies altogether.
Survey Findings –
• Blogs, RSS, wikis, and podcasts are becoming more common, perhaps because companies have a greater understanding of their value for business
• Companies use Web 2.0 technologies more frequently for internal than for external purposes
• Web services (software that makes it easier to exchange information and conduct transactions) remains the technology with the highest level of use among respondents across all regions.
• Only about one employee in four uses Web 2.0 tools, except for Web services.
• In Companies that are mostly satisfied with the deployment of Web 2.0 technologies, more than half of all employees are using them.
• A higher level of usage is found at companies that encourage it by using tactics such as integrating the tools into existing work flows, launching Web 2.0 in conjunction with other strategic initiatives, and getting senior managers to act as role models for adoption.
• Dissatisfied respondents, inability of management to grasp the potential financial returns from Web 2.0, unresponsive corporate cultures, and less-than-enthusiastic leaders are main barriers for web 2.0 adoptions in enterprises
• Satisfied or not, all companies plan to spend more on Web 2.0 tools and 60% respondents see web 2.0 tools as a driver of competitive advantage.
• Companies will use web 2.0 to drive innovation
My two cents –
• Enterprise 2.0 is all about culture and in many cases organization culture is not ready for E2.0
• Nothing wrong in failures, learn and move ahead, experiment
• Management buy-in is must
• Focus on people, think how it will help in there daily work, find out early adopters(and in many cases companies focus on tools)
• Web 2.0 adoption at enterprise level may be tough, think at department/process level to start with
What do you think, does web 2.0 tools in a company add value? How can companies use web 2.0 tools….?? How can companies overcome cultural chalanges….??
