You want to search something, where do you go….?? Most often it’s the big daddy of the Search Engines – I mean “Google”. But now you can think about something bigger! Yes, the big daddy Google, has got a big brother now – “Cuil.com”, that is what they claim!
I was just surfing net and getting bored when Siddharth (a.k.a Sid) told me about “Cuil.com”. It claims to be bigger than any other search engine. I thought it was worth spending some time to know something that claims to be bigger than Google. It’s just a week old and I see tones of people writing and talking about it. All this in one week! Good PR I must say.
Cuil (pronounced as “cool”) was launched last Sunday (i.e. 27th July 2008). It claims to have a bigger index size (120 billion web pages) than Google or any other search engine (Google doesn’t disclose the size of their index, although they claim to know about a trillion unique web pages). Cuil team includes some ex senior Googlers. The super-stealth search project was founded by highly respected search experts – Husband and wife team Tom Costello (CEO), Anna Patterson (VP Engineering) and Russell Power, all of them ex-googlers, no doubt the service will be compared with Google form day one!
Cuil’s search results are displayed according to what they say, “Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.”
They’ve dropped one of the “l’s” from their name – previously the company was known as “Cuill.” Either way, it’s pronounced “cool.” I would not be surprised to see the company changing its name from “Cuil” to “Kuil”, and they can still pronounce it as “Cool.”
I liked the search page (homepage) of Cuil, in contrast to Google it has got a black background and it has also got the search box in the centre of the page unlike the later. I found Cuil’s site layout better than Google. It displays a thumbnail along with almost every search result. Look wise the new bride seems to be more beautiful, but will it be as effective and efficient as the old ones in satisfy the users? I would say that as of yet the answer is NO.
I searched for couple of words on both Cuil and Google and I got the following response:
1. Chocolate: Cuil – 199,469,807 results and Google – 220,000,000
2. Hyderabad: Cuil – 12,595,503 results and Google – 22,600,000
3. Technology: Cuil – 506,622,856 results and Google – 1,220,000,000
4. News: Cuil – 1,760,210,967 results and Google – 3,860,000,000
Not only the search results were more in number, I also found that Google’s results were more relevant than Cuil’s results. What I liked about Cuil is that the related searches often are very well chosen.
Is Cuil already #1. I feel the answer as of now is NO. But I also feel that it will be a tough competition to the search engines including Google. Being #1 is a long way but it does have the potential to reach their.
